Kalshi Seeks CFTC Approval to Enable Margin Trading on Platform
Event contract exchange Kalshi has asked the CFTC to permit margin trading, a move aimed at drawing more institutional participation.
Kalshi, the prediction market and event contract exchange, has formally requested that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approve the use of margin trading on its platform, according to a report from CNBC. The proposal would allow users to purchase contracts using borrowed funds rather than requiring full capital upfront.
The request represents the latest in a series of steps by Kalshi and rival event contract exchanges to attract institutional traders, who typically rely on leverage as a standard tool for managing large positions and capital efficiency. Margin access is widely viewed as a prerequisite for meaningful institutional adoption in derivatives-adjacent markets.

Kalshi has been aggressively expanding its regulatory footprint and product offerings in recent months. The company, along with other platforms in the event contracts space, has been pushing boundaries on what types of contracts it can list and how those contracts can be traded, drawing both regulatory scrutiny and market interest.
Whether the CFTC will grant the request remains unclear. The agency has historically taken a cautious approach to event contracts, and any approval of margin trading would likely require careful review of associated risk frameworks, clearing mechanisms, and customer protection standards.
